The Pensavvi Dinner Series

The Pensavvi community gathers on a regular basis to explore "big-picture" topics such as macroeconomics and geopolitics, as well as deep-dive dinners exploring areas of significant technological change. These have included Quantum Computing, the Private Sector Space Industry, The Business of Professional Sport, Biotechnology and the Energy Transition.

About

After years of careful curation, the community is comprised of intelligent, engaged and curious individuals who seek to understand and stimulate change. Our ethos is one of collaboration and contribution.

Our goal is to stimulate lateral, non-consensus thinking,
by featuring some of the world’s most original thinkers

Some of our recent “deep dive” dinners

Rob Meyerson

The Private Sector Space Industry

Rob Meyerson (former President of Blue Origin, Independent Director of Axiom Space) shared his views on the newly emerging space industry, including his experience in building Blue Origin from a laboratory to a scaled enterprise with 1,500 people and multiple missions under its belt. He explained the criticality of government infrastructure to private sector involvement, the thesis behind his new space startup, and he was joined by several accomplished entrepreneurs in fields including space junk management and microgravity biotechnology research.

Niall Ferguson

Geopolitics

Historian and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institute, Niall Ferguson warned that the world is sleepwalking into an era of political and economic upheaval akin to the 1970s —only worse.

Greg Lippmann

Macroeconomic Outlook for Election Year 2024

Greg Lippmann was one of the principal originators of the subprime mortgage short during the 2008 great financial crisis. Michael Lewis featured Greg in his book The Big Short and Ryan Gosling played him in the movie of the same name. Our conversation covered Greg’s background, his story of how he devised and analysed the subprime short trade as well as his views on the current macro landscape and its interrelationship with the US fiscal position.

Nico Rosberg

The Business of Sport

An evening with Chelsea Football Club, Nico Rosberg (Formula 1 World Champion), TikTok and others. An in-depth discussion of how the European professional sport industry (and specifically the Premiership) differs from that of the US, the proposed Superleague, opportunities in secondary sports, and whether and when the Euro-US convergence that underlies many US and Middle Eastern ownership plans will materialise.

Dr Illana Wisby

Quantum Computing

Two founder-CEOs, Dr Ilana Wisby of Oxford Quantum Circuits (compute backend), and Dr. Carmen Palacios-Berraquero of NuQuantum (quantum networking) spoke about their businesses, funding, use cases, customers and market positioning, as well as the challenges and nuances of spinning out from the university ecosystem.
